Africa Economy South
South Africa and the World Economy in the 1990s by Pauline H. Baker, With the recent announcement of the lifting of sanctions, South Africa stands poised to emerge from years of economic isolation into a world undergoing dramatic transformation. What patterns of trade and investment in the world at large will shape the external environment facing South Africa in the 1990s? And what will make a developing country like South Africa internationally competitive in this decade? Furthermore, what role can international trade and investment play in spurring economic growth in South Africa, alleviating the country's poverty and promoting a more equitable distribution of wealth? These are some of the questions that came under the spotlight at an international conference organized in 1993 by The Aspen Institute and IDASA (The Institute for a Democratic Alternative for South Africa). At this conference, held in South Africa, a number of leading economists and policy advisers from the United States, Asia, Latin America and Africa met to stimulate discussion about a range of critical issues facing the South African economy in the years ahead. This book, like the conference on which it is based, explores South Africa's international economic trends and their implications for South and Southern Africa.
Security and Politics in South Africa: The Regional Dimension This analysis of South Africa's postapartheid security system moves beyond a realist discussion of interacting states to examine Southern Africa as an integrated whole. Despite South Africa's manipulation of state structures and elites in the region for its own ends, the text argues, the suffering endured under the apartheid regime drew the region together at the popular level, and economic factors such as the use of migrant labor reinforced the process of integration. Exploring how the region is changing today--as transnational solidarity and a single regional economy remove the distinctions between national and international politics--the book explores whether South African domination can finally be overcome and considers what sort of cosmopolitan political arrangement will be appropriate for southern Africa in the new century.
Economy of South Africa - South Africa has a two-tiered economy; one rivalling other developed countries and the other with only the most basic infrastructure. It therefore is a productive and industrialised economy that exhibits many characteristics associated with developing countries, including a division of labour between formal and informal sectors--and uneven distribution of wealth and income. Economy of Lesotho - Lesotho's economy is based on agriculture, livestock, manufacturing, and the earnings of laborers employed in South Africa. Lesotho is geographically surrounded by South Africa and economically integrated with it as well. Africa Fighting Malaria - Africa Fighting Malaria (AFM) is an NGO based in South Africa which states it "seeks to educate people about the scourge of Malaria and the political economy of malaria control." AFM was formed in 2000. King of South Africa - The King or Queen of South Africa was the nominal ruler of the Union of South Africa during the state's existence as a dominion of the British Empire (and later a realm of the British Commonwealth) from May 31, 1910 to May 31, 1961 when the country became the Republic of South Africa. Since the Union of South Africa was a British dominion the British monarch served as South Africa's monarch represented by the Governor-General of the Union ...
